HL8 - Wont power up

I just received a prebuilt HL8, loaded 4 drives, plugged it in and hit the power button, nothing. Any suggestions? I saw this post Power button doesn't work but I find it strange if this were the case since this was assembled and tested by 45HomeLab.

Will it turn on if you short the power switch pins on the motherboard?

The linked thread is about the power button for the HL15. I think the HL8 may use a different one.

Although they shouldn’t have come loose in shipping, I’d doublecheck the 24-pin and CPU power cables to the motherboard are firmly in their sockets. And, not to be condescending, also that the AC cord is firmly plugged into the HL8.

Anyway, first thing I’d try is eliminating the power button. 45HL isn’t known for their industry leading power buttons.

I can confirm it’s not the same button. I do think it’s the same used with the Home Client and Home Workstation.

The FlexGuru PSU does not have it’s own on/off switch, correct? It did not seem to in the pictures I could find.

Correct - there is no physical on/off switch on the flexguru.

Today, I opened the box and hit the power button, it powered on. I started to close the box and it shut down. It seems like a short. I was able to power it on one more time, but again shut down when attempting to close the box. Now it doesnt power on. I reseated the power button cables as well as the mb power to no avail. Any suggestions?

@rymandle05 can probably help you with what to inspect about the power button, but you should probably also send a note to info@45homelab.com about this, since clearly something isn’t right.

Do you think it was the action of closing the case that actually caused the shut down, or was the timing just a coincidence? The reason I ask is for a power-button shut-down request, it usually takes depressing the button for a few seconds, not a momentary press.

Maybe something is shorting under the motherboard? People say the build is a bit cramped.

This is a little odd. A short or loose connection in the cable shouldn’t power off the system. The power button bridges the two power on pins. A loose connection would fail open and not have any effect on the system when the button is pressed.

Now it is possible the power button is getting stuck “closed” which would exhibit the behavior you mentioned where the press closed the electric loop and started booting. If the connection then remained closed then it would the system would be powered down after 5 seconds or so. The opening and closing of the case could very well be just a coincidence.

It’s also possible another cable is the cause of your problem. Perhaps the 24 Pin ATX plug or cables as David suggested.

Did you ever try this other suggestion from David? Unplug the two black wires from the switch to the motherboard header. Then use a screw driver to very carefully touch the two pins together. The system should boot up. I’d hold off on moving anything until you get it power on for more than a few seconds.
