hello
I am planning to set up a homelab for personal projects and learning. What are the best hardware and software recommendations for a beginner?,
are there any guides or resources to help with setting up and managing a homelab efficiently?
thanks
Welcome @almaalice098! Great to hear you’re looking to get into homelab. Your question, though, is a little wide open to really offer good suggestions. Can you help us understand a little more on what you anticipate those personal projects and learning to be? Are there any other factors we should keep in mind like budgets or power efficiency? Are thinking this will be more of a server that hosts things for you or a workstation to use or both?
A lot of us in the homelab community start out repurposing an old desktop computer to be a dedicated server, workstation, NAS, etc. It’s a good low barrier of entry solution for a lot of people. Others, like myself, really love hardware and go the used (or in the case of 45Drives equipment new) enterprise hardware route. I’m actually in an upgrade cycle at the moment and have three Dell R640’s arriving today that I’m looking forward to setting up with Proxmox and Ceph.
This video from a youtuber Hardware Haven might be a good starting reference point. He just put out this video talking about things he would do different if he started over with his homelab. His content is geared more towards the repurposing old hardware for use in homelab.
