SATA Link dropping

I just received my new fully burned in HL15 and i’ve installed TrueNAS scale. I was in the process of copying over data and i’m seeing these errors in the console.

ata3: link is slow to respond, please be patient (ready=0)
ata3: COMRESET failed (errno=-16)
ata3: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 310)
ata3.00: configured for UDMA/33

Also, when i try to do a SMART test on the drive (It’s in slot 1) when the error message are displayed, it comes back as aborted

the interesting thing today when i went to check on it, i don’t see the errors in the console and a SHORT smart test was successful. TrueNAS never notified me of any errors, but i can say when it was producing the errors in the console, performance of the system was terrible. It would constantly drop speeds for a few seconds, (my theory is that would happen when it would fetch data from the disk)

Does anyone have any thoughts on what it could be? I forgot to mention, the system has 15 new Seagate Exos X20 ST20000NM007D 20TB hard drives. I’ve already ordered a new x20 as a replacement to see if that’s the problem, but i’m wondering if its a backplane issue as it is intermittent.

I think I came across a post similar to this somewhere on the internet while troubleshooting my own new fully burned in HL15 intermittent SAS drive issues. I’ll keep racking my brain here and see if I can remember where.

In the mean time, I would inspect and reseat the cables between the motherboard and the back plane. Also, if you swap Slot 1 with a drive in a another slot, does the problem follow the drive?

I think I remembered! The TrueNAS forums has an updated firmware available for LSI-9300 / SAS3008 controllers that fixes a bug with SATA drives causing resets with controller. Probably not your issue since slot 1 is connected to the motherboard SATA controller.
