The HL15 I ordered is to replace a home-built machine that currently sits on the floor of my closet next to my rack that contains mostly networking gear. I was thinking originally of just putting the HL15 in the same spot I had the old NAS, but was thinking of adding it to my rack. I don’t think it will fit though (HL15 and rails).
My rack is a Sampson SRK12
Which is a 12U 19" Universal Equipment Rack with a 18" depth.
Looking at the specs on the HL15, its dimensions are 4U: 20.000"L x 17.125" W x 7.000"H which is 2" longer than my rack
The rails available are:
2U-3U Rail Kit (MCP-290-00053-0N) has a quick inner and outer rail release.
Min rack mounting depth = 26.5"
Max rack mounting depth = 36.4"
and the short one is:
U-5U Rail Kit (MCP-290-00058-0N) has a short quick inner and outer rail release.
Min rack mounting depth = 19.6"
Max rack mounting depth = 27.0"
Both exceed the 18" of my rack. So I’m assuming I need to either get a new rack with at least 2" more depth or put the HL15 on the floor. Am I right? If so, does anyone have a suggestion on a 16U+ rack that would be <$500 and would fit the HL15 and one of the rail kits?
You could just lay the HL15 on top of your rack, if you didn’t want to stand it vertically next to it.
The Startech rack works. I have a Raising one, but they don’t seem to make something between 15U and 27U.
The main thing to avoid (and would be another problem with your current rack) is A/V racks. These typically have round holes like yours rather than square ones for cage nuts or rack studs, and don’t have a clear path from the front holes to the back holes for the rails. Other than that, any computer server rack that will adjust to fit the depth of your closet and has the number of rack U height you desire should be fine.
This also implies you’ll have to install some cage nuts (supplied with the rack) to screw your current equipment into.
I was hoping my existing rack would work but didn’t think it would. Thanks for verifying. I think in the long run I’ll want to get a new rack, but I’m not in love with any I’ve seen so far. Adjustable racks should be fine, but I’d rather have a non-adjustable in the ideal U and depth configuration for me which I haven’t found. I’ll just wait for my system to get in, figure out what works best, and then shop around more for a rack.
Thanks for the help again.
we actually have this exact rack in our lab that holds a mini portable ceph cluster with 3 storage nodes and 2 smaller compute nodes and have had no issues with it
Whatever rack you decide on just make sure its a 4-post rack and has a depth long enough to fit the HL15 inside of.
Both rails we sell will fit that rack “server rack enclosure with 4 vertical rails and an adjustable mounting depth of 5.7” to 33.0"" from the rack itself and our rails are adjustable from both 19.6-27" for the short rails and the regular rails are 26.5-36.4" so either will work but the standard length rails are slightly cheaper at 104 USD vs the shorter rails at 135.99 USD
