PSA: HL4/8 Crimped "Low Profile" Molex Connectors

For those who purchased or looking to purchase an HL4 or HL8 with an acrylic front but supplying your own Flex PSU, you may need to do modification or buy a different cable due to the need for “low profile” molex connectors to keep the PSU cables clear from the rear fans.

Backstory: I ended up being on the of the “unlucky” ones who bought a barebones HL8 chassis, paid for the acrylic front panel upgrade, but received the base unit instead due to an glitch in the e-commerce software. The good news is 45Drives was great at getting my situation rectified. But this is also where I learned about the need for “low profile” crimped molex connectors. Moving the case fans to the rear leaves almost no clearance for cables and there are no fan grills to help keep the cables away from the blades.

Documentation can be found here, but you can see from these screenshots what I’m talking about:

My assumption this all HL4/8 units that are purchased with a PSU from 45HomeLab already has this modification done. If that’s you then you’re most likely good to go.

All that said, it wasn’t a big deal for me to get crimped connectors added. Here are photos of me using some 3D printed tools and jigs to install these molex connectors myself. It all worked out great.
