Prepping for HL15 Beast need some ideas

Hello,

I am an Unraid user and have been since about 2008. I have tore down my servers and put them back together several times, expanding onto other servers and just wanting to learn more.

I’ve tested proxmox, and really enjoyed it, but I went back to unraid because it was familiar and it just worked for my needs. That’s not to say I’ve given up on Proxmox and learning more, hell I just finished builiding a TrueNas server and was actually impressed with it.

I used the TrueNas to take a snapshot of my unraid storage pool, removed some drives in unraid and recreated the pool and put everything back and that worked well. So I’m always open to learning.

I bought the HL15 Beast chassis as I am just moving my hardware over. Here is a picture of my current unraid server. I actually have another unraid server that I will be consolidating into this one. Power prices are getting insane.

The other Unraid server, Orochimaru (yes, it’s a thing; I did it because when my children were young, we watched Naruto), is using only SSDs. I planned to move that into the Beast (naming it Sannin) and making that my VM Pool.

I plan on getting the Intel Arc pro B50 just for the VMs, and yes I am aware that Unraid won’t break up the card to be run in multiple Vms at once, but hey I never thought they’d ever get ZFS, so I’m hopeful.

Would this be a good way to install proxmox and play around with it? Just curious on your thoughts and ideas. Great community from the posts I’ve read. I look forward to hearing your responses.

Not exactly clear what your question is. If you want to run both Proxmox and Unraid I think the recommendation is to run Proxmox on the bare metal and set up Unraid in a VM, similar to the way people run TrueNAS virtualized on Proxmox. I assume there are guides for this online. I don’t have this setup personally, I have separate TrueNAS and Proxmox boxes. The setup and maintenance can be a bit tricky, but many people do it; it seems like you might be up to it.

If you go down that route you would presumably gradually migrate your Docker containers and VMs from Unraid to Proxmox, so that Unraid is left managing just the storage. You might also need to consider the RTX 4000 GPU. I’m not sure how you are using that in Unraid, but I think Nested PCI passthrough isn’t really a stable thing, so if that is currently set up for PCI passthrough within Unraid, you’re better to move whatever it is being passed to as a Proxmox container rather than trying to pass the GPU to an Unraid VM to then pass it to some container within Unraid.

If you want to just “play around” with Proxmox and aren’t really committed to it as the bare metal OS, you might want to repurpose Orochimaru for this after you merge it into the Beast.

I haven’t seen anything more than a few low res pictures of The Beast, so if you could take some pictures of the empty chassis, the SSD area, the build and make any build notes that would be great.

Let me know if I missed the question and I’ll try again or I’m sure someone else will chime in.

Thank you so much for you repsonse. I will definitely take pictures of the journey and document what I can.

I wasn’t thinking running unraid on proxmox, but you did give me an idea of what to do with Orochimaru. I could load up promox on there and play around with it and just leave unraid as is.

Orochimaru is on a Dell R330, and I have a Supermicro SSD DMO16. I’ll install Proxmox on that. Thanks for the idea, and I’ll be sure again to document and take pictures. Whenever I receive the Beast.
