When I hold down the power supply (FlexGuru Pro 500w) I am getting a constant clicking noise. I have verified that it isn’t a power issue. Same result when plugged directly into outlet or when plugged into UPS. Is the power supply toast?
Can you elaborate on this more? I’m not understanding this and how it factors into the problem.
More generally speaking, a clicking power supply is a most likely problem waiting to (outside of the initial turn on or off). My guess is it’s on its way to failing or being worked too hard (nearly over loaded).
When I hold down the power button the PSU has a constant clicking noise and the mobo doesn’t boot. I can see power lights on the mobo but it doesn’t seem like the PSU is applying power like it needs to. I am going to test with another PSU but like I said in the original post I have never heard a PSU make a clicking noise like this.
There isn’t anything other than the motherboard and drives plugged into the PSU.
Is there something unique about your power button or motherboard? You should only need a momentary press of the power supply. Holding it down initiates a hard reset. There’s a decent chance the motherboard wouldn’t get passed the early boot sequence if it’s continuously held down. I have an Dell R640 which does this sometimes because the small power button likes to get stuck down from time to time.
I think PSUs are supposed to have fairly long warranties, like 5 years, so if we’re talking about an HL4/8 you purchased in the past two years or so, I’d contact 45HL and/or FSP for a possible replacement.
Perhaps recheck the cable connections, both power and front header. And as you said, temporarily confirming the PSU is the problem, and not, say, a short on the motherboard or something. Even though the motherboard lights up a few LEDs, it could still be the problem.
It’s hard to diagnose a sound, even if you posted a clip of it, but it could be an overcurrent protection relay (indicating a problem with something connected to the PSU), or a fan issue.
What happens if you just have the 24-pin connected but not the CPU power or SATA power? Same clicking? You can also get something like this to allow you to power on the PSU without any motherboard;

I plugged in the other power supply that I had and confirmed the issue is the PSU. I have sent a message to 45HomeLabs and will hopefully get a response tomorrow.
I get the clicking noise regardless of whether it is a short push of the button or a long press. Nothing special about the button. I held it down a little longer than normal to confirm the clicking noise.
Hey, Sorry to hear you’re having these issues.
Could you reach out to info@45homelab.com so we can look into this issue further?
I did reach out to the support team and after speaking with them I have a new PSU on the way to me. Thanks,
John
