I want to set up a game server and a Jellyfin/Plex server. I’m considering the HL15 for the hardware.
I plan to stream my own legal dumps, from NES up through Switch. For movies, I want to create 1:1 backups using an automatic disc ripper. I know I’ll need a few PCs and a server for this setup.
For the ripping station, I’ll use my own DVDs, Blu-rays, and 4K UHD discs. Then I’ll play the movies on my TV, or I might get a Zidoo Z3000 Pro or something similar.
For consoles, I was thinking about an Odin 3 Pro Max. I’m not sure if I should buy the HL15 case with the PSU included, buy it pre-built, or just get the empty chassis. I don’t know much about servers, which is why I’m asking so many questions.
I’m also getting 5-gig fiber from Ziply, which uses Ethernet—something that feels a bit strange to me. my cousions wants me go for the god teir is which is the hl 15. can guys give build ides os ides what os ? i should have i have on the server
With so many typos, it’s a bit hard to take your post seriously. If you aren’t a spammer, you need to slow down and put a bit more thought and care into what you are doing.
Do you have any estimate (GB) of the amount of data you are trying to back up/stream?
Are you the only user, or are there more people in your household that will be streaming stuff at the same time?
Do you have any experience choosing parts and building PCs?
The HL15 might be overkill for what you are trying to do and an HL8 or 4 might be a better choice. To run Plex, the typical recommendation is to use hardware transcoding which requires a GPU like an Intel A310.
Do you have a higher end GPU currently for your gaming that you want to use in this system?
I’m not a gamer, but I know a lot of games run mostly on Windows, and there is SteamOS for Linux. Are you just trying to run emulators for old game systems, or more modern games?
Do you know anything about Linux or are you mainly a Windows user?
The connection speed to the internet and around your home can be different. Whether you can make use of the 5 gig from a single computer will depend on a number of factors. Without some planning, it would be more supporting, multiple concurrent users, eg 5 users each at 1 gig.
So this really comes down to your own comfort level. Are you good building consumer PC’s? Especially with 45HomeLab, these “servers” are mostly ATX cases. The hard drive backplane is the only “unusual” component but it really just plugs into SATA or SAS connectors of some shape or form. That said, the Full Build options are the going to be your fastest path to ripping movies and backing up ROMS. The HL8 and HL4 are also good considerations you can look into.
I’m not familiar with Ziply at all for internet. That said, you’ll need network equipment across the board to take advantage of 5gig fiber. That means every network switch between the HL15 and the equipment Ziply provides will need to 5gpbs or better.
If you go with the Full Build, Rocky Linux with Cockpit+Houston UI comes preinstalled. This basically gives you a full Linux distribution with a web interface for certain administrative functions. I personally use TrueNAS which is less flexible but generally more straight forward to get going on a setup like this.
