How do you lock the HL15 to the rail when pushed in?

Is there a way to lock the HL15 when the server is pushed all the way in? I’m trying to install some cable from the back, but it keeps pushing the server forward.

You secure the equipment in the rack using cage nuts or studs on the front. Your rack should have come probably with some nuts and bolts. The SM rails themselves don’t lock open or closed. I got some thumbscrews similar to the ones used to release the top on the HL15 so I could secure and unsecure my servers by hand and not need a screwdriver. (rack studs would also do that).

If you just want to prevent it from moving for a minute you just need one bolt. But for safety you should put one or two on each side.

Adding nuts after the rail is installed is almost impossible. Why are those holes not aligned with the rail itself?

Rack Studs can be inserted from the front if you can’t easily place new cage nuts.

as well as having other benefits. Being sure you aligned the HL15 on a RU boundary is important though. If you split an RU they won’t quite line up with the openings on the ears.

I’m not a rack expert, but I think the holes in the rails are intended for securing the rails in the rack, and not for screwing the equipment through the rack to the rail, except perhaps for something 1 RU. For example, you wouldn’t want someone struggling to remove a server from the rack and accidentally knocking the rails out of place, since they are only held in by tabs and gravity if not screwed in. You could easily end up with an expensive server sideways in the rack or in pieces on the floor. Remember SM stuff is designed for enterprise data centers, not homelabs.
