I was wondering if anyone had tried to get Houston working on FreeBSD, sort of like TrueNAS Core, being FreeBSD/ZFS but with Houston for the web interface?
I doubt it. HoustonUI is a series of cockpit modules and, as far as I can tell, cockpit is only made for Linux. I do believe all the source code is on GitHub so an adventurous individual or two could fork it to compile and possibly get running FreeBSD.
Back in the old days, SunOS 4 tried to be both ATT UNIX and BSD UNIX. Admin file formats could differ. Locations could differ. One always had to be careful about path and environment. It was a bit of a pain.
Second, TrueNAS is restructuring into Community Edition and Enterprise Edition. The primary difference is that Enterprise will support the rack mount offerings, cluster, and thin deskstop stuff. Both are Debian based. FreeBSD is being retired as drivers were not available for newer storage interface cards.
