Just received my HL8 unit. It came pre-installed with Rocky and Houston. I don’t see a way to keep Rocky and Houston since I need it to function as a Proxmox Backup Server. Am I wrong, and if so - why and how would I do that? I’m not familiar enough with Houston to know that I can load PBR on top of it and still have full hardware access.
Any suggestions as to if this can be done?
Also - physically, I only see 1 rj45 interface and wifi, but Houston seems to be showing 4. What’s up with that and would it be possible to utilize the wifi as my ipmi. I don’t think so, but just asking.
Assuming you want Proxmox Backup Server to run on bare metal, you won’t be able to install it natively on Rocky Linux. PBS does provide an option to install on Debian but no other distributions. You could virtualize it on top of Rocky and use Houston/Cockpit to manage it.
If you do install PBS on directly on your HL8, you have the option to install Cockpit and HoustonUI again. Just make sure to grab copies of the Houston config files from the factory install. In my opinion, you won’t get much from Houston other than the hardware screens from 45Drives; assuming your HL8 is strictly for backups. If you plan to run containers or VM’s or something else alongside PBS then Houston would be more beneficial.
