I have an HL8 with an intermittent problem the drive in the last bay (2-4) shows as an empty drive slot in the cockpit gui with ZFS pool as degraded. I replace the drive and if i’m lucky on the first or second power cycle it recognizes that there is a drive in the bay I can add the drive to the pool it re silvers and everything is back to normal for a few hours some times days then I end up with a degraded pool showing an empty slot again. I have tried multiple drives in the 2-4 slot with the same result. I have also tried 2 of the drives that “disappeared” in slot 2-4 in other slots and they work fine. I am pretty confident it is not a drive issue. Any ideas or suggestions for further trouble shooting. Thanks linden
Could be a cable issue or (if those are the drives connected to the m.2 adapter) an issue with the m.2 adapter.
Try identifying the cable for that backplane slot and flip it at the SATA end with one of the cables connected the other way (if it is m.2-connected, flip it with a mobo SATA connection or vice versa). Try to see if the error follows the cable, the SATA port or the backplane slot.
If you contact info@45homelab.com they can walk you through confirming, or ruling out, a backplane issue.
Thanks for your suggestions, I have swapped cables around at both the motherboard end and the back plain end and the problem fallows the cable. I have sent my results to the info@45homelab.com. We will see what they come back with but at this point it looks like its just a faulty cable. I will update here when I know more with the hope that it might help some one in the future.
