HL8 did a update over the weekend and hangs at boot

Looks like my NAS did a update over the weekend and now is hanging on boot

Been stuck at this point for over a hour

Well that’s not good. Sorry to hear you’re having issues. Did anything more ever spit out? I can’t tell which distro you’re running (assuming Rocky), but Ubuntu or Debian will usually kick out some kind of “waiting” message after some time. Chances are whatever is left waiting is either your culprit or at least related/dependent upon it.

Regardless, you’re going to need a different way to access the system to fix any problems. If you can access the grub boot loader menu a lot of distro’s have a “rescue” or “recovery” boot option which will load only the basics and drop you into a prompt. This is also called “maintenance” or “single user” mode. If you don’t have premade option, then you can find your way there by changing the bootloader options. This article does a good job walking through that.

How to Boot into Single User Mode in CentOS/RHEL 7

A live distro environment can also work from a USB drive. There are even some designed around fixing broken operating systems like https://www.system-rescue.org/.

I got it fixed it was the JetKVM that I was testing. it looks to be back feeding power into the USB unpluged it and it boot just fine. Thank you guys so much

The plot thickens! That’s super interesting. Do you have the HL8 Full Build? I believe there’s quite a bit of interest on this forum around the JetKVM. It’d be nice to know if this is an issue that can be fixed somehow through settings or a future update.

Yes I have the full build. I noticed on my other home built NAS the case fans still spin once I unpluged the JetKVM that stoped that lead me to the JET KVM backfeeding USB power to the system. I am looking for a USB cable that can cut the power leads to plug into the system, cutting this problem out.
