Hey everyone, I chose just the default cables with the Hl15
Can someone recommend the best hba card to use with it I believe the default is mini sas had
Or if I made a mistake which. cables hba card should I grab? Looking for the best Going to be using all Seagate enterprise 24tb
I have used hba cards in. forty five drives servers in the past, but they were all pre built. This is my first time putting together my own HBA based server. All my true nastboxes. and things like that before this, I plug straight into the motherboard.
Welcome @Reedith8! I don’t think you can go wrong with LSI. The slightly older 9300 and 9400 cards have really come down in price. The link below is one from ebay that has the SFF-8643 connectors that work with the HL15 “Set A” cables.
There are some cheaper but potentially fake cards out there. This seller on ebay, The Art of Server, is known to be pretty reputable.

Interesting. Yeah, when I called Home labs support they said looking for a 9305 hba.
Is there any reason to go for an lsi 9400 over the 9300
Do you know how many minisas come out of the hl15 backplain ?
Is there a reason to get a different type of cable? Does it unlock better Speed or reliability or performance or something from the drives and back plane.
Or better Hba card options?
Not really in my opinion. LSI 9400 will probably be supported longer with drives and operating systems. If the price different isn’t huge, go with the latest you can afford.
I have a HL15 which helps. For the most part, you don’t need to worry about the backplane because all of the options you can pick are curated to work with it. It’s really about what connectors your HBA or motherboard has. Each cable set has a description in the store with how many cables and the connectors on each end.
No real difference in performance from the cable perspective. If you go with an HBA, you’ll have options to use SAS or SATA drives instead of just SATA. Again, the cable options are mostly offered to match the connectors (or mix of connectors) your motherboard or HBA cards might have.

Okay, great that’s good info, yeah, I’ll message that guy on ebay and see if he has any ninety four oh oh s. I’m just the personality type that. if there’s A slightly newer model that’s what I want to buy. I want to invest in the newest thing that will last the longest, but I don’t have to ever think about it again. Lol. I like to learn things once and then. never think about it again. And that’s what I’m trying to do with this server, is set it up and not think about it for 5 years.

The server parts guy has a 9500. Any reason not to go for that?
Is it an LS 9500-16i? The 8i version won’t give you enough wires for the 15 drives on the HL15 backplane.
A LSI 9500 will use a different cable set. They typically use SFF-8654 connectors, not SFF-8643 like the LSI 9300s and 9400s. That’s not a reason not to purchase one, just something to be aware of putting together a build.
