Drive temperatures in HL8?

I got my HL8 build up and running (many thanks to the craft computing youtube channel).

I got everything loaded up and running smoothly and noticed that my drives are running a little warm. They are a mixture of Ironwolf Pro and Exos drives and according to the dashboard summary the middle set of drives are anywhere between 48-52C. Everything seems fine, but I feel like that is a little warm to be running in the chassis, even with the supplied 120mm fans on the front plate. Has anyone else seen high drive temps in the HL8?

I might look into removing/remaking the front plate to get more airflow, any other suggestions?

Yeah that seems a little high. The Seagate Exo’s in my HL8 build with acrylic front are currently reporting 32-35C. It’s pretty cold in my basement right now at 15C. I’m going to assume you don’t keep your house / room at 30C (~86F). :fire:

What else are you running in your HL8? Did you end up to doing a similar build as Craft Computing? I think most hard drives are good under 60C, but I imagine you’d be more comfortable with a little more headroom.

I’m running a handful of containers, but on average very low CPU usage. Plex is probably the most ‘noisy’. I did almost exactly the same build as craft computing with the arc310 and the minisforum board. I even got the m.2 sata adapter to work that he could not.

I’m running a noctua fan on the CPU heat sink, and everything is plugged into the motherboard for fan controls, everything else seems fine temperature wise.

My chassis is in my utility room which is around 21C/70F.

How hard are the fans working. Maybe you need to adjust the fan curve?

Hey All,

Thanks for the suggestions, I went into the BIOS and tweaked some of the temperature settings. Thanks to DigitalGarden for the suggestion!

Looks like the upper limit was set for MUCH higher than what I wanted (80C!). I set them to kick on much lower and the drives are (mostly) happy. Highest temp is now 48C instead of 50+. The rest of the drives are mid 40s or lower.

Glad to see that it was my own doing and easily fixed!
