So my backplate died a very slow but painful death.
over the last 2 years i had on/off issues with now in retrospective only a few drives from the same slots #2. I always thought that it might be because of an faulty HBA, which i then immediatly replaced though AMZ (thank god for their return policy).
However, 2 weeks ago after my 3rd replaced HBA things did not resolve themself after the replacement like usually so i switched a drive from 1-09 to 1-15 (i only have 14 drives in it) and that did seem to fix the issue.
(narrator: but in fact, it did not)
Well yesterday during a rsync task from my cloud servers, it happend and the whole system died with an suspended pool because of I/O errors. After rebooting the system the pool was available again but truenas immediatly becane to resilver. It took then around 30 minutes until another drive died.
After pulling the HL15 out of the rack i switched around the drives, i switched the HBA with a smaller one, i switched the ports on the HBAs and i even today got new SAS-SAS cables because i hoped it was just a fault cable.
(narrator, exhausted: but in fact, it did not. Again.)
So after i swiched everything around, changed everything from cables to HDDs i concluded: its the SATA backplate. So i took a spare PSU and some SATA-SAS cables in a widely unsecure setup:
And rebooted the server. I had some zfs corrupted datasets which i resetted and now everything works again.
So yea i got an bad backplate. I already wrote a mail to info@homelab.com because the contact form on the website did not work. I hope i get a replacement and fast (germany) because i am sitting on a lot of data i need to access in my rack and this is not a good solution even short term.
