HL15 Bad Backplane?

Yes, the cables labeled A/B from 45Drives were both replaces with the new pair they sent. No more issues now that the original cable B was replaced. but each boot 9-15 aren’t available until the service is started. I disabled the service and same issue. not sure why, but I can live with that for now.

and as a complete idiot, I found the issue with the zfs pools. my zfs pool is called “Atlas” and through troubleshooting, I realized the root folder /Atlas was still created which was the issue. I delete /Altas from the system and created my zfs pool and no issues. found this by creating a zfs pool with a different name and had no problem.

All is good, if server reboots for any reason I’ll have to start the udev service to get 9-15 online, but at least I’m up and running again for now.

Hey @matthammond are you sure you plugged cables A and B to the same ports on the both the motherboard and backplane? If you were to reverse one end of the other for some reason, you would have one of the drives on a different SAS devicepath that the config files probably are not setup to handle. This is because 9-15 is only seven devices on the backplane but the motherboard has 4 lanes on each connector. You could try swapping A/B on the motherboard and see if that has any effect.

I’m guessing you’re ok but just a passing thought as I read through this newest development.

Yes. So after replacing and still having issues, 45Drives was kind enough to conduct a Zoom meeting with me. We shared screens, went through troubleshooting, and during the meeting, bays 5-9 completely failed. During our time, the technician was able to determine a bad backplane and they are sending me a new one. Once received and installed, I’ll follow up here with updates.

You should see if they will be willing to send you the power cable for the backplane as well.

You had to take the backplane off the chassis off to be able to replace it. It may be better to do both at once and is a bit of a pain to be able to do. I would hate for you to have to do it twice like i did.

After troubleshooting further on mine. It seems that the backplane would get power but the drives weren’t spinning up (you can tell because the backplane has tiny LED lights under the fans in the center of the case). Not to jinx myself, but once i replaced the cable, the system has been pretty stable for the 24h.

Hi @matthammond, Im sorry to hear you are haveing issues with the backplane on your HL15 server. If these issues persist please reach out to info@45homelab.com for more assistance on this issue.

Following up, received a new backplane. Been running for 4 days with the new backplane and no issues.

I’m glad you seemed to have gotten it resolved. Knock on wood. But, the fact (if I understand the thread) that they sent you a “Fully built and tested” unit with both a bad motherboard and backplane seems to suggest the “testing” process might need some review.

Yes I bought a fully built and fully configured HL15 with the highest specs that you can select on the website. Received at the end of December. Within 2 months both the motherboard and backplane had to be replaced. As bad as that is, I must say, the support from 45Drives has been outstanding. They have been quick to work with me from emails, phone calls, and even video chats to go through troubleshooting steps to ensure/determine the faulty components and then have next day air me the new components. Their customer services is top notch.
